Working With Existing Niches in this Home Office Update

I’m not a big fan of niches (I have some in my own home), but in this home office update, they came in handy.

This homeowner is doing a remodel and the cabinetry in their home office is getting redone. They needed a furniture layout and they really wanted to know what to do with these existing niches in the wall. Should they just sheetrock over them and close them up?

Here are the dimensions of the room, almost a square. The existing desk will stay.

The homeowner sent a sketch and dimensions of her space. So helpful!

    new Home Office Layout

In so many cases I do not like niches, however in this one, I do! I think they could be perfect for bookshelves and the center one that goes all the way to the floor, would be a good place to tuck in a piece of furniture.

Here’s the new layout I proposed that gives some purpose to the niches and will tick all the boxes of wants for this space.

    They needed:

    1. plenty of storage and a credenza type work surface

    2. to reuse the existing desk

    3. some lounge seating would be nice

    4. to figure out what to do with the niches

I love this cabinet for that niche. The size works perfectly, I like how it is up off the floor and lightweight looking but still has lots of storage. This color won’t protrude into the space either.

Here’s how it looks in the elevation. Fits into that niche just right!

I’d like to see the shelves slightly deeper than the side niches are, so that the shelves dog-ear over the edge like a window sill. That will give a little more depth and make them a little more useful.

See the shelf detail I’m talking about, below, used in this etagere seen at Highpoint Market last spring. This even has a slightly curved shelf which also might work for this home office to give more depth to the shelves.

Etagere bookshelf seen at spring Highpoint Market, 2022 in the Hooker showroom. carlaaston.com

Here is the elevation sketch I did for the built-in. I want it to resemble a piece of furniture, so I pulled it away from the side walls by a foot and then varied the heights. The side sections are only 15” deep and the center lower section can be a 24” or whatever the homeowner needs for a worksurface.

If you go back and look at the room, the niche comes right down into the corner on the right side of this wall, so the built-in can’t really touch that wall if we leave the niche. The ceiling design is centered in the room too, so having it go to the ceiling here wouldn’t really work.

I always prefer stained wood countertops, they just wear better than painted wood and look more like a desk. It provides some nice contrast too.

They could paint this whatever color they prefer. Something dark or just a few shades darker than the wall maybe. Depends on the wall color they use and what they like.

Here is a pic from a job site of mine where I did a similar built-in, although it was wall to wall and to the ceiling. You can see the storage can be changed up, but this is the general idea.

5 Easy Christmas Decorating Ideas For A Home Office

A Pink home office decorated for Christmas

I am so excited to share my Christmas decorating ideas for a home office in collaboration with Very because I don’t usually create a lot of Christmas content. Normally, I am far too busy planning and celebrating all the family birthdays that fall in November and December and then frantically trying to get Christmas organised in the remaining two weeks. It’s a very stressful and busy time of year. But I couldn’t resist the opportunity to work with Very on this Christmas campaign and share how I have decorated my office this Christmas.

Christmas decorations in a pink home office

As many of you will know, I own a small, boutique coworking space in Devon for female entrepreneurs. What makes it different from other coworking spaces is the fact that it is really small and feels more like a home office. There is absolutely nothing corporate or commercial about it. So all the ideas that I share in this post are perfect for decorating your home office this Christmas.

It may seem unusual to decorate your home office for Christmas but considering how many of us are now working from home due to the hybrid model that arose from the Pandemic, it makes sense that we may wish to add some festive cheer to our workspace. After all we could be spending up to eight hours a day in this room so why wouldn’t we want to make it feel a bit special as we approach Christmas.

When implemented, these Christmas decorating ideas for a home office should hopefully provide a much needed wellbeing boost to get us through the dark and miserable days on the lead up to the festive break. I know I feel so much better when the sparkly lights and shiney decorations go up.

A woman placing light up letters saying Ho Ho Ho on a shelf in a pink home office

When Very asked me to take part in their Christmas campaign I was really happy to see what a lovely selection of Christmas trees and decorations they had and more importantly how many of them worked perfectly with the style and aesthetic of my office. The office is very pink, so the traditional Christmas colours of red and green were out of the question. I wanted something that would add even more warmth to the space and work seamlessly with the existing decor. So I was looking for dusky blush pinks and warm metallics and that is exactly what I found.

So let’s take a look at how I created this gorgeous winter wonderland in my office.

    Put up a Christmas Tree

A gonk stands next to a flocked Christmas tree in a pink home office

If you have space, a full size Christmas tree is the most obvious way to bring that festive feeling into a room. Standing tall, it makes a big impact in the room and really draws your attention. To keep costs down, I chose a 6ft Flocked Emperor Pre Lit Pencil Christmas Tree because I knew that this would still look pretty without all the decorations to hang on it. Baubles can be costly and I didn’t really want the added hassle of having to store them throughout the year so I decided to keep it simple.

Also as the office is really very small, I couldn’t spare the room for a tree that is too wide so instead I chose a pencil tree. I still have height, but it fits really neatly in the corner and doesn’t impact too much on the flow of the room.

A woman fluffs up a flocked Christmas tree and places a gonk on the floor next to it

I also dressed up the tree a little by adding a beautifully soft Christmas tree skirt in faux fur. This helped to disguise the stand and make it look a little more finished. I’ve never used a Christmas tree skirt before but I am now converted and won’t be without one again. It’s the small details, right?

If a full size Christmas tree is not an option, opt for a table top Christmas tree that you can place on your desk or on a pedestal or sideboard. Even a small tree adds a lot to the room and makes it feel extra special. As my office is large enough I chose to have both a full size tree and a table top one.

Switch Out Artwork for Christmas Wreaths

A woman places Christmas wreaths on the wall in a pink home office

If wall space is limited, you can always take down some of your existing decor and replace it with the Christmas decorations. I didn’t want to put up any new hooks so I used what I already had. The normal artwork has been packed away for a few weeks and instead I have hung a beautiful pre-lit wreath in its place.

Choosing a pre-lit wreath gives it that extra bit of sparkle and you simply need to add batteries to light it up. It’s super easy and makes a real statement on the wall.

I also chose a flocked teardrop Christmas wreath which comes with battery operated lights. I hung this beside the fireplace because I had a spare hook there but it could have replaced any other bit of artwork in the room.

Add a Garland to the Fireplace

A frosted pink garland on a fireplace in a home office

If you live in a period property, you may be lucky enough to benefit from a fireplace in your home office that you can decorate for Christmas. For me, this is an intergral part of the Christmas decorations. I think it adds so much to the room and can be used to make a really big statement. I chose a frosted rose swag Christmas garland to place on the mantle piece. This was a very easy choice, partly because the colours work so well with the fire surround and tiles but also because I like Christmas garlands that are big and full. I also like the way it doesn’t hang down too far on either side.

If you are not be lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home office that you can decorate at Christmas, don’t worry. You can get a very similar effect by placing a garland on top of a sideboard or cupboard. You could even suspend one above a window or simply hang one on the wall above your desk. Try to get creative if you don’t have a fireplace to use.

    String Up Some Fairy Lights

A pink home office decorated for Christmas

In my opinion, you can never have too many fairy lights. I used to put fairy lights up in my office when I was employed and not just at Christmas. They create such a lovely soft light and a really cosy atmosphere and they help to brighten up those dark winter days.

I chose this LED snowball light Christmas garland which I hung up around the fireplace. It is really long at 1590cms so I was able to take it around the corner of the room and then also hang it around the window. I intend to keep this up even after Christmas so I’m really pleased that this is mains powered so I don’t need to keep changing batteries.

Decorate Your Shelves & Window Sill

Dark wood shelves in a pink home office adored with Christmas ornaments and candles

Another easy Christmas decorating idea for a home office is to decorate your shelves and window sill. Whether you have a shelving unit, built-in shelves or wall-hung shelves, these can be used as a place to display your Christmas ornaments.

Again, you can remove some of the things that you would normally have on the shelves and pack them away until after Christmas. I took all my books and a terrarium down to make room for more festive decorations. I also removed some of my plants on the window sill and rehoused them elsewhere.

I chose a pair of ceramic deer ornaments, two fairies with dangly legs and battery-operated light-up wings, a set of battery-operated Ho, Ho, Ho room lights, and a gold light-up tree topper. The tree topper proved to be a little too heavy for the Christmas tree so I placed it on the shelf and it looks fantastic.

I also chose a Christmas gonk with retractable legs, which my daughter has named Gerard, and I have positioned him next to the fireplace.

So there you have it. Those are my easy Christmas decorating ideas for a home office. Nothing groundbreaking, but I hope that seeing how easy it can be will inspire you to decorate your own home office this year, particularly if it’s not a room you have thought of decorating before.

Very has a great selection of affordable Christmas trees and decorations so it needn’t break the bank, but I guarantee it will make the drab winter days in the run-up to Christmas feel a lot cosier and more fun when your home office looks this good!

    Mini Office Makeover

    Office Makeover

Recently Wayfair contacted me to feature my craft/workbench on their site!  Wayfair is one of my favorite stores, so you can imagine my excitement, I am truly honored to be included in this project!  It was a wonderful opportunity to clean up the office and take some updated photos of my mini office makeover since I haven’t put updated photos of the office on my site in quite a while!

It’s been a few years since the last time I changed up my office and while I still plan on repainting the room this summer (if I can just decide on a color!) I have done a mini make over!  One thing I try to do in my makeovers is to use things I already have or acquiring things for free!!   I have wanted to replace my little black desk with a much larger table for a while now so when a friend was getting rid of a very large table/desk I didn’t hesitate to claim it as my own – score one for me!!  Then one of my sisters asked if I wanted her cowhide rug because she was doing a little makeover I immediately said yes– score two for me!!  This makeover didn’t cost me a cent, I just took out the old desk, the free-standing fireplace and gave the previous chevron rug to one of my neighbors!

Now what I love about my mini makeover – That desk!!  I have wanted a super large workspace area for a while now.  My old desk wasn’t the most convenient piece of furniture to work on which meant more times than not I would end up sitting on the floor to do projects.  With my “new to me desk” I have more space then I could dream of!  I still love my shelving unit I made on the back wall, using two old short bookcases on the ends with large planks of wood connecting the two bookcases, this lends to a generous space to hold my crafting & sewing supplies as well as my sewing machine, printer and cricut!

I love it when a makeover doesn’t cost me any money and even more when the makeover turns out how I had planned it!

Wayfair is not only one of my favorite stores but I will always be grateful to them for being one of the sponsors for the fire station room makeover I did a couple of years ago!

Don’t forget to check out Wayfair’s Workbench post to see some other amazing bloggers spaces!

25 Modern Backyard Home Office Sheds You Wouldn’t Want to Leave

Remote work becomes more and more popular each year, encompassing ever more professions that don’t require workers to be at the office to perform their duties. And so does the rise of home office pods that you can plonk inside your garden, and enjoy working in peace and quiet.

Modern office sheds 900x600 25 Modern Backyard Home Office Sheds You Wouldnt Want to Leave

As far as modern outdoor home office sheds go, you can now choose from a wide assortment of cubicles that you wouldn’t want to leave.

    Backyard Office Sheds You’ll Love

Looking like tiny little homes, garden office pods are self-sufficient, productive spaces where you can make a living and create, think, and ponder.

    1. Tiny and Efficient Office Shed

25 Modern Backyard Home Office Sheds You Wouldnt Want to Leave
    Sett Studio garden office

Sett Studio designed such a backyard office to not only be stylish but also energy-efficient thanks to Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs). A tall window provides views of the garden, while the solid wall street fences off the busy street.

The beauty of having your own working studio is, obviously, that it eliminates commute. But it’s not only saved time you gain. You can also order a garden office pod design that will accommodate your every need like additional space for meeting with clients or a separate room for resting.

This pod was designed for a professional photographer to remove distractions as well as provide some space to receive clients and do small shoots.

    2. Small and Modern Outdoor Home Office Sheds

Backyard Room decided to combine functionality and natural aesthetic in this tiny office shed project. It is not only surrounded with greenery, it is planted with it, which creates an intimate and fairytale-like retreat.

Small pod is enough to house a desk and a couple of chairs. Outside, there is an adjoining terrace and a bench for productivity-raising breaks and post-lunch naps.

    3. Narrow Office Shed

    Narrow Office Shed
Garden Studio by Serge Schoemaker Architects

A long narrow garden isn’t a problem for a custom design. Garden Studio in Bussum is a narrow unit that acts as a study, a guest house, and a storage place.

Aside from fitting perfectly into the allocated space, the studio has a design that corresponds with the neighboring buildings, but not without a modern touch.

    4. Cozy Mini Pod Office Shed

Although their price can reach up to $30,000, the office pods may well be worth it as a temporary (or permanent) office space or studio for your business. It doesn’t have to be big.

This small office shed was built for a chartered structural engineer, and reportedly paid off.

    5. Wooden Office Shed

    Wooden Office Shed
    Office in My Garden pod

The modern outdoor home office sheds market has grown so much that you don’t need to buy prefabricated catalog models. You can have your own design built by professionals, who specialize in construction and carpentry like Paul Winters of Office in My Garden.

Winters offers custom design as well as a portfolio rich in different types of units combining modern design and practical sensibilities.

    6. Modern Outdoor Home Office Shed With Wood Plank Siding

Wooden plank siding is the most attractive thing in the world. And it seems like office pod manufacturers know it better than anyone.

Even the most modern office will look inviting and stylish with this type of siding. Just look at this Green Studios garden office pod.

    7. Sleek Backyard Office Shed

These are also easier to fit with more traditional or simply older modern architecture. Sleekness and simplicity of such design works wonders in any style.

Bold glass inclusions like in this office-yoga studio by Neil Dusheiko bring contemporaneity to simple wooden structures.

    8. Garden Office Shed

A garden office shed can be repurposed for storage and additional needs like a workout room or a guest house.

A professional photographer, Ben Rice commissioned Green Studios to build him a garden room, where he could keep his kit as well as work. Ample space within the structure further provides multiple changeable options.

    9. Minimalist Modern Outdoor Home Office Shed

At the very least your garden office can double as a roof garden. It’s not purely decorative, mind you, a green roof is a great way to insulate a pod that stands in a sunny spot.

Surrounding yourself with greenery is a good way to create a perfect creativity-inducing retreat as well.

    10. Private Backyard Office Shed

Australian magazine called Inoutside designed an entire collection of modern outdoor home office sheds. You can see a glimpse of what’s on offer in this Cooba unit.

Enclosed in wooden plank siding, the office looks stylish and modern with its modest black steel-framed windows and glazed doors.

    11. Contemporary Large Office Shed

Peter Guthrie imagined a clean contemporary modern office in the garden without any unnecessary details or elements. Just the walls, the roof, and some natural light.

We like the simplicity of the project that focuses on work and eliminates distractions. There is just a thin glass transom for resting your eyes without needing to get up every fifteen minutes.

    12. Comfy Backyard Office Shed

Micro Max Pod by Pod Space

Another project from Pod Space is Micro Max Pod that flies under $20,000 mark. Although small, it offers a feature you wouldn’t find even in the comfiest office – underfloor heating. Ever dreamed of working without your shoes on?

The rest of the bill includes a full height window and a glazed door, Siberian larch cladding, and white micro-porous paint interior.

    13. Modern Outdoor Office Shed With Louvre System

Many of the modern outdoor home office sheds remind us of those trendy tiny houses. Seriously, it looks like one could live in these offices.

KitHaus specialize in small homes, but some of their sheds would make perfect garden offices like this one from K4 Series. Turns out tiny structures are more versatile than they look.

    14. Shaded Office Shed

BLOOT Architecture combine living space with a home office, and they did it under permit-free construction limits.

The result is a brick cube-like structure with a timber facade and a Louvre system that provides more privacy for the guests, and eliminates visual distractions for the working residents.

    15. Glass Office Shed

    Garden office by Cube Life

Cube Life offer their expertise in garden building along with modern home office model designs that are so good, you could hold meetings in them.

This particular shed is like no other, as it features glass walls all around, but when you need to shut out all the distractions, a louvre system is there to provide comfort.

    16. Contemporary Backyard Office Shed

    Contemporary Backyard Office Shed
    Sky Pod by George Nijland

Another one of Pod Space designs was conceived by George Nijland. It’s difficult to find a more contemporary, sophisticated, and stylish garden office shed.

A small Louvre system looks more decorative than practical, but you’ll never lack natural light with that generous skylight in the middle of the pod’s ceiling.

    17. Contemporary Style Garden Office Sheds

    Contemporary Style Garden Office Sheds
    Studio Shed

If wood doesn’t suit your new contemporary house, then perhaps a design from Studio Shed’s Signature Series would make a fitting addition to your yard?

Made of Zip System weatherproof wall panels and corrugated Galvalume roofing, these sheds are built to last a lifetime, or at least that’s what the firm promises.

    18. Tiny Office Shed

    OfficePOD

Want your office to have a futuristic or space ship-like aesthetic? OfficePOD is the perfect candidate, as it looks like a small ship’s cabin, designed just for work.

The POD was designed to eliminate distractions so expect decent soundproofing and sleek interior design.

    19. Glass Cube Office Shed

    Harwyn Office Pod

Harwyn is, too, an extraordinary office pod that challenges the rules of garden offices themselves. Its sleek and minimal design is more contemporary than modern.

Built with a double-layer protective system, the Harwyn cubicle is weatherproof, but you can add features like remote control blinds, a heating panel, and many others when choosing your design.

    20. Whimsical Office Shed

    Whimsical Office Shed

Combining shed and office in more than just the name, Platform 5 Architects created something more than your run-of-the-mill garden office for a 1950’s terraced house in St. John’s Wood, London. Its curvilinear shape, that was intended to fit organically with the natural environment, creates pockets of space for work and rest, and bears a cool retro futuristic aesthetic.

    21. Versatile Office Shed

    Versatile Office Shed

Also from Studio Shed, we have the Summit series which comes in several formats. You can go for a bathroom and a small kitchen, a bathroom and a large kitchen, or only a bathroom and a large open space. After all, it’s up to you and your needs.

The office shed comes with top of the line bathroom amenities, sturdy flooring, a tankless water heater, and HVAC, to name a few. The kitchen is also fully equipped if you choose to have one.

    22. A-Frame Home Office Shed

If you want an office shed that looks like a small home, then one from Sheds Unlimited will certainly do the trick. The one we’re proposing comes with an A-frame, and vinyl shutters. Depending on the size, it will cost you between $4,000 and $8,300 to get this one in your garden.

Then, you’re going to have to invest a bit to transform this beautiful shed into an actual office. Nonetheless, it’s just a bit of DIY work.

    23. Friendly Office Shed

    Friendly Office Shed

Another cool option is to get your office shed from Stoltzfus Structures which gives you plenty of customization options, allowing you to pick the doors, the windows, flooring, roof, and so on.

The floors are insulated so you don’t have to worry about being too cold, the walls and ceiling insulation will help you enjoy the shed year-round.

    24. She Shed or Office Shed?

    She Shed or Office Shed?

This time around, the office shed doubles as a she shed for one lucky customer. It’s the place where she works on her art and that also serves as a much-needed workspace.

Created by Tuff Shed, the build features four windows, a beautiful door, and it’s super easy to set up.

    25. Modern Office Shed

The folks from Modern Shed are ready to help you build your perfect office shed, with just the right size, the format you need for your backyard, and so on.

It’s possible to choose how many windows you want, what shape they should have, whether to have an awning, what the walls should be made of, and on and on. It’s a dream come true for everyone who wants to micromanage the project.

Final Thoughts on Backyard Office Sheds

There is nothing quite like working in a peaceful green garden within a few feet of your own home. Modern outdoor home office sheds allow that separation to be as convenient and painless as possible.

With all of us conducting business from our counters and sofas these days, having a dedicated home office is on everyone’s wish list. Case in point: Havenly, an online interior design service, says that requests for home offices skyrocketed from 6 percent in 2019 to 26 percent today. And since February requests have gone up 160 percent.

“It all jumped the week of March 16, when the world went indoors,” says Lee Mayer, CEO of Havenly. “Even when we can go back, more people will work from home than ever before. So having a space you can be productive in will continue to be super important.”

Designer Jessica Becker, owner of design studio Burrow & Nest, agrees that the time is right to carve out your own private spot. “Many people need the relief of going home to recoup,” she says. “So now that we’re not at the office it’s important to compartmentalize work and be able to shut the door on it, so to speak, at the end of the day.”

It’s also about looking at the bright side. “No matter how tiny your space is—unless you’re used to a C-suite—home is definitely better than a desk or a cubicle,” says coastal Georgia interior designer Elaine Griffin.

When it comes to figuring out where to work, it pays to think outside the home-office box. “We had a client who wanted us to turn an oversized bathroom into a home office,” says Mayer. And Griffin gets creative with video calls. “I place my laptop on an ironing board to get the proper height—it’s way easier than setting up stacks of a gazillion books,” she says. Another of Griffin’s video-chat secrets? She places a white sheet on her lap to reflect the light and provide a flattering all-over glow.

An ironing board doubles as a standing desk—and just might inspire you to press those shirts. (Photo: Havenly)

Wherever you decide to get down to work, it’s important to do everything you can to raise your spirits. “When working from home, it’s hard to not feel like it’s Groundhog Day,” says Mayer. “To keep things interesting, light a different candle, play different music, or wear a different lipstick.”

To make the juggle less of a struggle, we tapped these top design pros for their very best tips on creating a home office in the most unlikely of places. Here’s how to make it all work.

    Corners and entryways

No space? No problem. A console table is just the right width for a laptop and a few accessories. (Photo: Havenly)

“When contemplating your work-from-home location, start with the corners—they’re typically the least-furnished parts of a home,” says Griffin. “From there, check out niches like foyers.” An entryway is a great spot for a narrow console that you can top with a laptop. Hang a mirror to maximize light and make the area feel bigger. Just remember: “Clutter is the enemy of small spaces,” says Mayer. So think vertical. Install shelves above the desk as high as you can go.

    Dining rooms

A separate dining room offers privacy. (Photo: Havenly)

“If you have a formal dining room that you don’t use regularly, it’s a great place to spread out,” says Becker. Just keep in mind that in a common area like this, storage is crucial. “Consider closed bins or pretty baskets that can easily slide under a table,” says Mayer.

Even a small dining nook can serve as an office in a pinch. (Photo: Havenly)

Countertops make excellent work surfaces, snacks are close at hand, and there’s excellent task lighting here—but just make sure seating is comfortable for the long haul: “You don’t want to sit on a backless stool all day,” says Mayer. And keep things tidy. Wipe down the counters, do the dishes, and pack up your laptop each night so you can enter the next morning feeling fresh.

    Living rooms

Prop a desk with decorative items that make you smile: flowers from the garden, a few favorite books. “Hang an inspirational quote above the desk and go for pretty organizing accessories so you don’t disturb the zen of your living space,” says Becker. Desks don’t have to take up precious real estate, either. “If your sofa floats in the middle of the room, pull up a desk to the back of it,” says Griffin.

Position the desk so you can see outside—you’ll get the benefit of natural light and a pretty view. (Photo: Havenly)

Think of alternative ways to convert existing furniture. Becker turned an old TV armoire into a home-office helper by building in extra shelves for a printer, paper, and file bins. And it makes sense to buy pieces that can be repurposed if and when you go back to the office. “Consider a narrow console that can later be used in the entry as a catchall,” says Becker. “Or a small writing desk that can double as an end table.”

The worst is when paper piles invade your life—so hide them or consider going paperless. “File cabinets nowadays go well beyond the antiquated metal versions of the past,” says Becker. “Choose a nice wooden option that looks like a piece of furniture so it blends seamlessly into your space.”

No room for a desk? “Create a ‘work nook’ instead with old-school TV trays,” says Griffin. “They’re typically about 20 inches long; line up a pair and you have Instant Office Central.”

    Under the stairs

That underutilized hollowed-out area under a staircase is just begging for shelving, a desk, a chair, and a file cabinet. If you’re building your own desk from a piece of wood, save your back by making sure it’s at the proper height—around 30 inches from the floor. The problem with these nooks is typically a lack of light; solve that with table lamps and a sculptural pendant.

    Home-school hideaway

How to have calm rather than chaos? “Create very distinct school and fun zones so there’s a separation between work and play,” says Mayer. Opt for a kid-size desk, and “put up a play tent or even just a designated area with masking tape that kids know not to cross over until you say so!” says Mayer.

    Basements

Sure, they’re not the prettiest places—but they’re private and away from household noise. “For a cozier feeling, cover anything unfinished with cloth or a tarp,” says Mayer, who adds that Havenly recently did a basement-turned-office project for a client who wanted a beach scene behind the desk. They hung large-scale art. Other ways to brighten the space? Put an old rug down to demarcate a work zone and add comfort underfoot. And go toward the light—place the desk near upper windows to grab any sun you can.

    Closets

A closet makes a fantastic work nook—just add shelves and a desktop. (Photo: Havenly)

Becker has created what she calls ‘tuckaway offices.’ “The closet door closes to ‘tuckaway’ messes, leaving the room otherwise undisturbed. Dress up the space by painting or wallpapering the interior, or use cork tiles,” she says. “This allows you to pin up notes and it’s great soundproofing, helping to cocoon you in a quiet area so you can concentrate.”

It’s worth the effort. “Don’t get lazy—remove the trim and get out the spackle and paint so it feels like an alcove rather than a space that got converted,” says Mayer. If you don’t have lights in the closet, use battery-powered table lamps or stick-up versions. And if you want this spot to feel like an extension of the room, consider removing the door.
