High gas prices affecting a Winston-Salem florist business

As gas prices continue to rise throughout the Triad, it’s not only affecting business, but also delivery drivers. WXII 12 News spoke with a local florist business about how those high prices are affecting them. At Bo-Ty Walker Florist in Winston-Salem, sales associate Courtney Anders said they do a little bit of everything. “A little of everything mainly flower arrangements for any events such as birthdays, holidays, we do a lot of funeral work. We also sell items such as plants and gift baskets, fruit baskets as well as balloons,” she said. Anders said a big part of their business revolves around delivering items to their customers. She said because of the pandemic, they’ve already had to raise prices. Combine that with higher gas prices and Anders said it hasn’t been easy. “It’s been a challenge. It’s gone up to where we now had to question to raising our delivery prices per customer and per item, especially when we’re delivering out to Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville and even East Bend,” she said. Anders also said the cost to fill up a delivery van is already expensive. She said with these higher gas prices, it just makes things add up even more. “If I recall correctly, one of the drivers delivered it up the other day and it was maybe $80 to $95. Sometimes $100 depending on how far out they have to go. And then you add in kind of these gas prices. Yes. Makes it a little challenging for the manager to have to keep that all in gear,” she said. But the silver lining in all of this she said has been the customers, who have stayed loyal, are considerate and have been very understanding. “We have a lot of longtime loyal customers that are very entertaining that we can just talk and cut up with on a daily basis anytime we get their orders and a lot of them have been very loyal and completely understanding with how the pandemic has raised our prices,” she said. Courtney Anders said the next step is to decide the best way to keep the prices at a comfortable range for both the customers and for the business.
